Obanyaki / 大判焼

By Jason Morley • japan, life • 1 Jun 2006

On Sunday, I found myself with little to do, so I wandered around Ueno market, generally spending a lot of money.

During my travels, I came across a truely wonderful invention:

Obanyaki

This fantastic machine (worthy of staring in films like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) produces Obanyaki (大判焼). They’re little pancake-mix cakes, containing a sweet bean paste known as azuki (あずき) and taste absolutely fantastic!

According to one of my colleagues at work, Obanyaki is the name of traditional Japanese money and they are also known as ‘Imagawa yaki’ and ‘Kaiten yaki’ depending on which area of Japan you’re in.

I’ve posted a few more photos on Flickr.
