The Swing Bar

I recently had cause to look through the various photos I’ve snapped over the past few years and came across this reminder of my time in Beijing:

The ‘Swing Bar’ on Bar Street became a regular haunt and featured this fantastic collection of musicians who would do their best to perform almost any song requested.

Uganda Bound

Being that I am quite useless in updating my blog, I can only imagine that my readership (small though it might be) are quite unaware of my recent travel arrangements. That is, with the exception of those 79-or-thereabouts who follow me on Twitter.
Representing a relative departure from my usual travels, I am [...]

Victorian Architecture

Returning to the UK, one inevitably flys into Heathrow and then takes the Heathrow Express onwards into Paddington. Despite the all-too-common feeling of sadness brought about by the conclusion of a journey, I still find the fantastic Victorian architecture at Paddington a reminder that there is something special about Britain.
On Friday last week, I [...]

Flutter Beta

Flutter is a light-weight iGoogle Twitter client and is the first of a number of small personal development projects I intend to release in the coming weeks and months.

It is offered as an alternative to the fairly heavy-weight user experiences offered by many of the existing iGoogle-based solutions. All tweets, including replies and direct [...]

Wordle Vision

It never ceases to amaze me what is created on the internet. Wordle is a case in point, offering a rather interesting alternative way to view text and websites.

This site looks quite different — already Twitter represents a large portion of my content.

Holidays Past

With a little more time on my hands, I’ve been enjoying sorting through old holiday photos. There remain many more albums to review — here is the first.
Autumn is commonly celebrated in Japan and, in the Autumn of 2007, Miho, Sarah and I journeyed to Nasu to enjoy the autumnal colours. The trip [...]

Sensible Show Synchronization

When synchronizing with an iPod or iPhone, iTunes offers two key options: ‘x least recent unwatched’ or ‘x most recent unwatched’. Unfortunately for us users, recent is determined, not by sensible things such as air-date or episode number, but by the date items are added to a user’s iTunes library. All works fine [...]

Enjoying London

While I am oft vocal about my dislike of London, I have been trying to turn over a new leaf and enjoy some of the city’s more charming aspects.
One of these has to be Borough Market. Located in London Bridge, the food market runs Thursday through Saturday and offers a fantastic experience, both gastronomically [...]

Moving On

Much has happened since my last weblog (considered) posting so this collection of comments is by way of a summary of some of those events.
February took Junko and I to Hanamaki, the home of Miyazawa Kenji, for some rest and relaxation. It proved wonderfully slow and middle-aged place with a little snow remaining from the [...]

The Sugar-Plum Tree

Have you ever heard of the Sugar-Plum Tree?
‘Tis a marvel of great renown!
It blooms on the shore of the Lollipop sea
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town;
The fruit that it bears is so wondrously sweet
(As those who have tasted it say)
That good little children have only to eat
Of that fruit to be happy next day.
When you [...]
